Feynman’s iϵ prescription, almost real spacetimes, and acceptable complex spacetimes

A bstract Feynman’s iϵ prescription for quantum field theoretic propagators has a quite natural reinterpretation in terms of slight complex deformation the Minkowski space-time metric. Though originally strictly flat-space result, once reinterpreted this way, these ideas can be naturally extended first to semi-classical curved-spacetime QFT on fixed background geometry and then, (with more work), fluctuating spacetime geometries. There are intimate connections with variants weak energy condition. We shall take Lorentzian signature metric as primary, but note that allowing become large leads variant Wick rotation, importantly physically motivated constraints configuration space acceptable off-shell geometries include functional integral when attempting quantize gravity. Ultimately observation allows one connect discussion back recent “acceptable” metrics, Louko-Sorkin Kontsevich-Segal-Witten sense, spacetimes occurring exactly boundary set metrics.
